Social Media That Lays Off Its Employees

At the end of 2022, ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, laid off hundreds of employees in various departments.

tafansa.id quotes the South China Morning Post; ByteDance is doing this to streamline the company's operations, including operational cost efficiency.

An application similar to TikTok, specifically for Chinese citizens, Douyin, said that they were also laying off employees. As additional information, currently, Douyin has around 600 million daily active users, as well as corporate gaming and real estate operations.

Not only Douyin, Alibaba Group Holdings and Tencent Holdings, as well as other Chinese internet giants, are also laying off thousands of workers in 2022.

So, according to ByteDance, he also applies this in his company to employees who perform poorly.

"It has become commonplace for companies to do this, especially if the company is trying to optimize its business," said one source.

"Employees affected by layoffs will be compensated according to the length of time they have worked, plus one month's salary," he added.

But at the same time, ByteDance is also looking for new employees. Currently, the company has around 10 thousand job listings ranging from engineering to marketing.

These 10 thousand people occupy ByteDance offices in cities around the world, including Beijing, London and Mountain View, California.

Another video service that is also laying off its employees is Vimeo. They also try to survive in the midst of bad business conditions.

It is known Vimeo laid off 6% of its employees in July 2022 and continued with 11% of workers on January 4 2023. This is in line with increasing company losses, which reached a nominal 21.4 million US dollars.

Meanwhile, other social media, namely Twitter, also reportedly continued to reduce the number of employees at the beginning of this year.

Quoting Reuters, there were more than 12 people at Twitter headquarters in Dublin, Ireland and Singapore who lost their jobs on January 8.

These are people on the global content moderation team, specifically the unit dealing with hate speech and harassment, and the policy team on misinformation, global appeals and state-owned media.

Even so, they did not cut ties with the team that worked daily.

Apart from pandemic reasons, 3700 people also left Twitter headquarters in November 2022. This was because Elon Musk implemented a new policy by cutting company costs after he took office as the new owner of this social media.
